NEAR Native Token
Use NEAR to pay transaction fees, cover on-chain storage, and secure the network through staking.
NEAR (Ⓝ) is the native token of NEAR Protocol. You can transfer it between accounts, use it to pay for network resources, and stake it to help secure the network.
Transaction fees
Transactions consume gas, which measures the computation needed to execute their actions. The sender pays for gas in NEAR.
See Gas and execution fees for how fees are calculated.
Storage staking
Accounts must maintain enough NEAR to cover the data they store on-chain. These tokens remain locked while the storage is in use; removing data releases the corresponding storage stake.
See Storage Staking for storage costs and requirements.
Validator staking
NEAR uses proof of stake to secure the network. Token holders can delegate NEAR to validators, which process transactions and produce blocks, and receive a share of staking rewards.
See Validators for how validators work, or follow Staking NEAR Tokens to delegate and withdraw tokens.
[!TIP]
Smart contracts can also define their own tokens. See Token Standards for fungible tokens, NFTs, and MultiTokens.
