you you want what you want you what you want what you want what want want what you want oh what you want what you want what you want what you want what you want what you want you want you want what you want want want want what you want what you want what you want want what you want what you want what you want what you want hey hey n system is all open and welcoming so you can go on GitHub and find all good first issues that are plenty of them and start taking also you can go to devhub and find the fellowship program and all the details about it and if you have near experience and you are willing to onboard other developers please join the fellowship program to contribute to guide them if you are new to near but you still have a pretty good technical background find the leaders that appli on near Dev Hub talk to them Reach Out outout to them ask for for guidance n system is all open and welcoming so you can so we believe to stop marketing start engaging and that's what we're doing over at devhub is that now the focus is no longer just about let's sell you something on why near is the best developer experience which it is right we all know it that's that's why we're here but we want to actually start to engage you as a user and better understand what do you need and how do we help you be successful instead of us trying to put our product to you oh what is like the ideal way you want users to come into the near blockchain ecosystem it always starts with some application right because like if you think of it as a user you probably don't care as much about like underlying infrastructure you want to start with a sweat coin some experience and then through that you're like oh this is interesting you figure out that actually like oh I can see my stuff there and I can use it there right so like you have things like nishe which is a community you have nfts but then this nfts show up in your wallet which you can use for example to get in into a event or get a ticket or something right like so you kind of have this like fluidity of motion and that's what web three is yeah this compability m hey welcome to another episode of near devhub live uh we have another great episode for everyone I'm your host Joe uh we are going to kick off this week with a great guests from edge of node in the graph uh we have Kevin who's one of the Devils over there uh we're going to talk about some of the news that's happening the ecosystem a lot of great things happening around chain abstraction around AI so we're going to get into some of that as well but I don't want to waste uh any time let's jump right into it with h Kevin from the gr and let's bring him up Hey Kevin hey what's up Joe hey thanks for having me appreciate it nice nice nice so uh when I know I think people who've been around the web 3 space for a while have heard the graph definitely uh maybe they haven't quite heard of Edge and node and like how that relates to as because the parent company um before we kind of jump into everything that's awesome that's going on right now with the graph you talk a little bit about like what exactly Ed and node is and like what the graph is yeah absolutely uh so so you know the original creators of the graph Network as it is today and a lot of the tooling was Edge and node so you know they got started um with the idea you know some Founders came together kind of built um built the network and built the product and then eventually you know um gave birth to the graph Foundation um and kind of uh you know passed off uh that to them so that they can start funding other uh developers in the ecosystem actually start building on it so uh we started seeing some other core developers get involved and start doing different things so you know there's like Semitic AI uh which is a probably something we're going to talk about a bit later who's doing some interesting stuff with AI and uh some other things that they built um streaming fast who's kind of revolutionalized um different ways of like getting data quicker through the indexing um and so there's yeah all these different core developers there's like seven of them that are all kind of working together to um you know to make the network better stronger and more reliable and effective for what we're trying to do nice nice so uh you're here mostly today to represent right the graph specifically and some of the things that are going on there so it's at near you know I know you there's been some Integrations here and there it hasn't been overly I wouldn't say like uh highly promoted over time but it sounds like there's a lot of really great stuff coming down the pipeline here that developers in the ecosystem should be paying attention to yeah absolutely I mean so you know one of the things that we're going through right now is we're um you know we've had the hosted service for a very long time I think probably like three years it was kind of like the initial kind of uh way to get some people on the network and like you know it's a free tier so people could um put their data there you know but really like the end all goal for for like web 3 is to decentralize your data uh and so the graph is really the only you know tool that you can really effectively do that um you know as far as a network goes you know it's already set up and kind of established so over 200 indexers so you know it's a good opportunity for people that really want to build uh for that that reason uh to use the graph Network to decentralize that that data layer right of their applications and then yeah there's interesting stuff like AI narrative which is really cool like we're you know Semitic is building AI models around subgraph data so you know for anyone who's new to uh the concept but um what it is is that on the graph you can build subgraphs and basically subgraphs are kind of like databases but they're decentralized uh with a graphql API endpoint um but all that data can be right modeled right so basically all the sub graphs eventually will be modeled at least the popular ones and you'll be able to subscribe to um you know AI as a service for these uh various models right so for defi this is like super powerful and there's there's an experimental um bot you can download and experiment with uh for UNIS swap uh if you go to the the blog so if you go to the gra.com blog you can you can find it but um yeah so basically interesting ways where we can start doing like interesting AI stuff with this data and you know predictive analysis on on defi which is really cool because um I think that's a popular space and there's more there's lots of cool stuff going on with the graph um it kind of gets uh confusing to talk about because there's so many different ways you can go down the the rabbit hole Yeah it it certainly sounds that way and I know speaking personally as a developer in crypto for a little while now that I think the full power of what is behind the graph isn't always realized I think like the immediate thing probably comes to mind is some of like the subgraph stuff um that's a little bit more out there but they really and I think even like that I feel like it was probably underutilized is that what's the challenge I guess you know kind of speaking as like a Deval and just thinking of like as talking with Developers how has that education process been of like getting across like what's really there in that product for them yeah I mean I think at first you know um the the whole concept of like uh having a middleware layer for like blockchain data made sense because you know like um all the blockchains are not really incentivized for reads which is something I was I kind of try to explain um but when it comes down to it like there's probably like specialized ways that you want to store the data um you know you probably you know need to maybe do some you know analysis on the data and then actually like some calculations and store that into subru so there's a lot of education on like teaching people like the proper way to do that um you know how to utilize like graphql uh to do things like um make relationship relationships in the data using like directed from so there's a lot of like best practices that's definitely a challenge um and there's a really good blog by Marcus that was just recently written uh that goes over like subgraph best practices there's like four on there and then on top of that there's like definitely some like long um living uh smart contracts um that you know an example would be Unis swap you know Unis swap has been around for a while there's you know multiple versions of it and it because it is a defi protocol there's a lot of data there in the blockchain so the indexing speed is a little slow with like standard subgraphs so like one of the things that we did is we had streaming fast which is what another core developer devis a new way of indexing called substreams and essentially there is now a substreams uh basically um way to extract that data and then put it into a subgraph like you normally would but do it in a much uh parallelizable way where um we can do it with like raw blocks and out out and in basically through a substreams configuration which is basically very similar to a subgraph but it's written in Rust and so it's very powerful form it so there's definitely been a lot of enhancements and features to you know the way we're indexing stuff uh giving developers more options and like a better experience for that process um and I think that's definitely been the probably the most valuable thing about the graph over the last you know a year or so is like we really been listening to what developers say and try to build stuff that makes sense for them yeah I got to imagine like that's probably some of the challenge where it's you know as you've been around for for a while and the longer you're in this space and the more stuff you have access to is just finding out like where the right way to go is because you know Altech moves quick but like in crypto it's like light speed and it's narrative after narrative and I go to imagine at some point it starts to slow down but for you guys just trying to you again being a multichain and everything else it's got to be just a nonstop Sprint of just not even just building but also just understanding right yeah yeah absolutely I mean uh like you said there's we support um you know over 40 chains and a lot of evm compatible stuff but there's you know we just added like Bitcoin you know so uh but definitely the graph like a lot of people think like oh the gr's been around for a while it's kind of just doing the same thing but actually we're we're staying very relevant I think um you know with keeping to our ethos of like decentralization and then still trying to innovate and create new ways of like indexing doing it quicker and so yeah definitely listening to a lot of what developers say and and trying to be tied into the community um it's very important you know we go to all the hackathons and stuff like that so that's it's important when when you go to a hackathon like what is usually your your guys' goal and like outcome there is it just to more educate or do you are you looking to get people like instantly start building you know on top of a subgraph things like that yeah I mean we we usually do a workshop so it's usually about a you know 30 minute intro and kind of show them how to build a subgraph it's actually really easy to build a subgraph you can do it in five minutes um I can kind of show that if if we wanted to but really uh you know it's like a kind of teaching them like hey this is how you actually like get started there's a quick and knit for that getting them up and running on their you know a lot of the hackathons we go to like ethereum focused but um you know that that's very easy to do because you can just run in a knit and it will like parse all the ABI and build out a subgraph automatically for them and then just trying to get them to use that in their application like from the start and like getting that mentality of like hey you know what you really need a like a middleware layer you don't really want to query the blockchain directly um you know you need something to store that data and it's very difficult to index that stuff on your own so yeah it's just like uh getting them right away like hey thinking about about that that indexing layer and then also getting them to do more interesting things so we usually have like a few bounties you know it's usually like best use of an existing subgraph which there's like you know over 3,000 that have been deployed to the decentralized network so there's a lot to pick from then there's like best new subgraph which is like building your own and doing more advanced stuff into in it is very much what we look for so like if you're you know doing some um using all the features and functionalities of the subgraph or doing something that's it's new and recently added to a graph node and then on the last one is like best substreams so like we definitely want people to experiment with substreams because it is kind of a a new technology and um you know it's it's definitely powerful but it is a little harder so any of like the more advanced developers are usually really excited about messing with substreams um you know I was I was just at um gosh where was I Prague eth Prague and like there's a bunch of people really excited uh about messing with substreams because you know they were Advanced developers so yeah nice nice yeah yeah why don't we if you don't mind you want to kind of walk us through some of this cuz I think it's better to kind of show some of this here yeah yeah yeah let me uh let me share my screen here I think I can just do my entire screen and then go ahead and click share and so yeah I mean I could go through some slides or we can just kind of like show um like a little bit of the studio I think it makes sense probably to to show off exactly what you know the graph has so if you first go to the graph website you know you'll notice like I said right now as we're going through this period where um we're asking people to up upgrade from the hosted service to the decentralized network and that's going to happen within five days and if you do that you know we cover all the expenses to move your uh subgraph over and there's an upgrade indexer that will pick it up it's really easy all you have to do is just like literally click this button and it's going to ask you uh to to go ahead and migrate over um and so you can it takes literally a couple minutes and you can just go and proceed um I already kind of did this so we can't actually do it uh in real time but you would see here there's no subgraphs uh need upgrading but if you did have one it would be listed here and then you could click proceed so it's it's free to do that you know you can literally do it like while you're making a coffee and it's done uh so I recommend if you have a a subgraph on the hosted Service uh go through and do that um but then as far as like the existing Network goes you know when you when you go here to products you know so we have the hosted service which is kind of going away and that's where we were like hosting service for people but then we have like the Explorer where you can explore all the existing subgraphs so like if you're using let's just say we we'll do a search for near here and we can see okay here's the request payments uh near account so we can click that and then we can see like oh it's currently indexing it's 100% and uh we can actually start exploring the data using graphql so again everything in um subgraph is is powered by graphql so you have this nice query language where you can like basically grab exactly what you want so if you didn't want uh you know some particular value you can like kind of comment it out uh we can then make a custom kind of request and hit play and then we just get back exactly what we care about so and there's this really nice Explorer here which allows you to come in and kind of like customize exactly what you want to look for so if we wanted to see all the payments and we wanted to order them by a specific time stamp we could do that and then we can make it descending so we get the the most recent and then we can have the amount and the amount in crypto and hit play so then we can see that the last you know payments here they are and this is how much they work for so it's really powerful and customizable right um and then if you're going to build your own subgraph then you're going to want to go to subgraph studio so subgraph studio is kind of this way where you can you know create your own subgraph and you can create one here and you can name it whatever you want so like if you had a near contract uh we could you know just put it here and you could go through the process of of creating your own and all the instructions are going to be here um and you can install the CLI tool you can initiate the subgraph um if you're deploying on near you know you need to actually build the subgraph I don't think it will automatically scaffold it out for you um but it definitely at least gets you in a starting point where you can start building and and quering that um and then you can authenticate against the studio and then do what's called a code gen build and then deploy it so you have this like easy to follow kind of experience as a developer to um to onboard and and and uh yeah get what you need for so something like near so when you guys are saying like hey you can build these subgraphs so are you you're just like fire hosing all of the transactions so each as the blocks are coming through you're just storing all that and then you're letting again essentially build another now layer on top of that indexed data yeah sure and I can kind of show actually let me just show some slides which might kind of make this make a little more sense this is kind of like what the the graph stack looks like you can see my screen yeah yes yeah so essentially like if you have like a Dap You know you probably still want to deploy a smart contract for that dap so you can um you know propose transactions and get all the security that comes with the blockchain right that's what we use blockchains um and then as your smart contract admits these events basically the the decentralized network or the the nodes as we would call them or the indexers they're running a stack which is graph node which is kind of what we see in the middle here and then they're running a a postgress database which is what we see as the data store on the bottom right and then they're also R uh running um ipfs which is for like storing like the Manifest and pinning and stuff like that and so what happens is as that smart contract contct the MS events or in you know your in your's case it's receipts uh the graph node can pick up these receipts and then uh process them and so what what the configuration actually looks like is it's a um it's assembly script uh compiled down into wasum that does this uh wasm module mapping here and so you can think of it as like yeah runtime where that's actually going through and polling all of the receipts and and collecting them and doing the logic that's inside of that kind of web assembly and then it's storing those into the postgress database and then graph node is then exposing that data with a graph C API so this way you know the DAP can just query the API directly and not have to go directly to the blockchain to make make requests when you build on top of something like this so let's let's use a more tangible example here on near so as near is going into chain abstraction and looking at being able to write and I'm not sure how familiar you are with what how it works but essentially you create the transaction on the near side and it's then you know um sending the intent to the other chains is this something where now because you guys are are indexing all a sudden you have all of this data where the it makes sense to be able to have these like maybe like multiple subgraphs but pull in to that and and really as you're building out your dap that you have this ability to have have these multiple sources of data all in one type of view yeah actually that's I mean you can actually look at um one of a good examples actually to look at this like uh near one here if we actually go here and go to about and we can like pull up the GitHub so you for every subgraph there's usually like a link to the website at GitHub you know if it's a good subgraph developer they put some in detailed information in here and the links um but I like this is actually a good one because like request Network has a you know payments subgraph here and if we look we have all the different subgraphs for all the different chains so you know there's one for there which is probably for the you know um you know the receipts and then they have stuff for moon beam and madic and mantel and so these are all the various subgraphs and so you know obviously we'd be able to like kind of go through the explore and probably find the ones we're looking for you know if we did like uh near request or like request Network um you know in this case there 's only two that are on near and there's probably some other ones that are on like ethereum mainnet and madic and so you can see there's lots of subgraphs that have been deployed for for request Network and uh yeah they're all sitting here in this repo and yeah they're you know they're kind of like organized in this way where they can kind of all be in you know if you're a good subgraph developer you can make references H you know between the subgraphs that allow you to kind of like link the data up um and then there's this there's this interesting concept of like a super graph where maybe in the future we are able to tie that stuff together uh you know maybe even maybe even using AI um and so yeah there's a lot of cool cool stuff for the future where you know we can create this kind of like Knowledge Graph too of the data which which is really cool because we'll have you know because we have access to all the data you know for all the different protocols and all the chains um you know all the popular ones at least and as we onboard more developers and it gets a little more powerful yeah for sure so when I think of from the developer perspective as I'm starting to build out one of the conversations we've had a few times on this show it's really about like I think the infrastructure problem for developers is something that I think a lot are still really working through right especially if you come from like web 2 it's a lot more straightforward of like you know I signed up for this service I get that service and I can just kind of start building we have all these different services that are maybe similar or overlap like right now if I were to build a Dap and I say where does the graph like I guess not just fill in but like what do I not need to else have if I just have you know graph Services yeah I mean you can imagine if it's anything that's you know on chain and you know you want to maybe like modify that data and store it as well like maybe you want to have like tvl like defi applications a good example you know you want to do some calculations and also store some stuff there it's also aggregations you know whatever basically it's the decentralized data layer of like everything related to the onchain data then on top of that you can also query offchain data with ipfs and R weave so that's really powerful because let's just say as an example you have an nft project that you've built and you're using you know the nft standard and you're referencing some stuff that's an ipfs you can also pull that data in and store it on the graph and you can kind be um you can kind of be sure that if you've paid for that subgraph to be indexed on the network by curating it and signaling for that that subgraph that it will be highly available and it will be picked up by multiple uh indexers so like on you know example would be you know I think I don't know Unis swap has a lot of indexers probably over 12 maybe even more 20 so that's like 20 different you know individual data centers that are storing that data so it's fully like decentralized and available and highly available um and yeah so you're basically just able to not have to worry about the data layer right so you get this kind of like increased performance and not having to worry about doing the indexing on your own and because subgraphs are very customizable and you can combine those with like substreams you really can do anything um with the data if you if you put your mind to it in theway very neat very neat so I know there's a lot of so besides you know moving away from the posted and and going more to decentralized thing I know there's some other programs you guys are putting together can you introduce a little bit of like what's happening uh with all of that yeah I mean so we are in the process right now where as you saw there's about five days to kind of go through and and basically upgrade your subgraphs um you know we basically take care of that migration for you at that point I think that uh host service will become rate limited to a certain extent uh I think it kind of goes over a long period of time so it was kind of already a little uh well not raate limited but you know it it just getting to the point where it's you know not you're going to have to pay for your queries um so yeah it's just a matter of time before eventually the hostage service will be shut down so it's just yeah we're kind of just handholding we're helping um any adaps that are having problems so we're available on telegram um you can you can find me if you if you need any help um my name is Kevin Jones creates you can find find me and I can help open the chat with your team um and then yeah we have like some interesting stuff that we were doing where you can kind of like promote um the graph and kind of do like tweets and so there's some stuff on the the the Twitter account for graph protocol that I would probably just subscribe to and see if there's ways that you can kind of like help spread the word about the sunrise um I think that's still going um and I think it's going to be going for like at least a couple weeks so it's going to be a long process we're still trying to uh make sure that people are aware of what's going on and so there's a lot of like yeah just like making sure if that we're available you know we have like a a room almost every day where we make sure that all the the adaps are not having any issues and have support they need we have like four or five support staff uh always on call so yeah definitely um just a lot of handholding and support yeah what what started this move I mean beside I mean I think everyone like the buzz word of decentralization I think obviously people say okay I assume that you know you want to get things off maybe some centralized servers or whatever else but was it for you guys also like is this a cost thing was it a way to be able to you know bring some of that down over time no I don't think it was a cost thing I think it was always the intention that that the hosted service would not be a permanent solution um the hosted service was always just a stepping stone for developers to you know adopt the graph so you know I think this has been a long time coming actually I'm trying to remember like they announced this like maybe like two and a half years ago at like the graph day um and you know we we're like okay we need to do this and we had set some like deadlines and it's like you know we realize that hey maybe these deadlines aren't um you know a reality and so we pushed a while and so it's been this long process of trying to get everyone to uh kind of come to the reality that hey this is why we're here it's really around the decentralization aspect and kind of um you know where we see the mission of the graph and how it's going to solve solve that little key component so a lot of people say like go decentralization is a meme but in this room in this regards we literally are talking about a network that's fully established and yeah is really serving that that that need for that middleware layer so so yeah was not a cost thing but just more of like hey this is where the industry needs to go yeah no I mean it it that mean that makes a ton of sense and I'm sure for I think you know as you were again out there probably talking to developers I got to imagine a question that probably comes up a lot for crypto devs is like you know where is this actually being held you know how am I connecting to this data some of that stuff and so I'm sure it just also helps with you know hey yeah know this is decentralized it's highly available now you know it's we're have all these better all these benefits that fit hopefully most people's ethos of why they're building here anyways too and so I can see how that'll make sense yeah I think it's definitely yeah oh sorry go ahead I was just going to say I think it's uh kind of there's a lot of like centralized Solutions that'll you know indexing for you and yeah maybe you get a little bit more like um you know handholding because you have like a company behind that you know this is more of a decentralized network but I think that um yeah for the for the for the use case um for some maybe people they want to have both and so it's really nice to just have this kind of like option like okay at least I know that like the stuff is stored in a decentralized way so uh it's censorship resistant um and truly Unstoppable right yeah yeah for sure so one of the things you brought up kind of early on is you guys starting to move a little bit more into the AI space uh can you talk a little bit about like what that actually looks like I know you meant like bringing in data but like what how does it start to form as a product for you guys yeah so if you go to the gra.com you know currently there's the subgraph studio and then there's the graph Explorer which I showed off um I think in the future it might be and this is me just kind of spit bling here maybe it's uh an actual area there where we have a completely different section for AI models uh and you'll basically be able to come there and it's similar to like a a chat GPT open AI uh experience you'll be able to come in there and say okay I want to you know query against this model for defi on ethereum Main net or maybe I want to search all the networks and I want to get uh some metrics that relate to anything def across you know multiple chains so it'll be basically basically a way to you know go through that studio and it would be almost some somewhat like a data service um in the long term maybe it's an application uh on your phone maybe it's um you know some kind of device yeah that you can um utilize application anyways um that would be really cool I think just having another have like a graph AI you know app on your phone where you can just hit the button and say hey I'm going to trade today I got $1,000 you know what's my what are my best opportunities for this you know price range and yada yada yada and it would just give you some data and then you can kind of come up with some like trading strategies or maybe you can see like um you know what's new in the industry like there's just lots of interesting things you can do with with the data that is available um over 3,000 subgraphs right so that that should be good yeah yeah that's really I mean that's a really interesting I think concept of especially for you guys where and I don't know I mean feel free to say if you don't want if you guys don't want to answer some stuff but like as a infrastructure first company right and now it's like oh well maybe we have this route to be actually building like products and stuff like that we can actually be a product company as well is that something that like you see happening you know at the graph and and do you see I guess just maybe in larger space of like as we are getting into these new paradigms of like AI is so data driven and there's so many products and like we're doing AI near and so it's like you know is it is that line between I guess being infrastructure and becoming a product getting blurred and not just a graph maybe just your opinion being in the space for so long like just in general like that you kind of see that yeah I can see as two different things so I think it's like the graph Network itself is like super established super functional you know superpowered by open source empowered by community and like every all the developers are working together to you know build these subgraphs and store their data in a decentralized way and I think that there's these core developers and there's other people that maybe we don't even think about today that are going to utilize that data in cool ways and so I think some of that is like Edge and node working together with like semiotic to do this kind of like AI stuff and then another example would be semiotic is per going to provide a a SQL layer right where maybe there's like a SQL connection for like data scientists to be able to consume that data in their own way and like streaming fast has this like fire hose and substream service and so there's all these different like kind of angles yes to how people are interacting with the graph and providing that data and so I think we we'll see those evolve and those what we call data services will evolve uh but they will be powered by the graph Network um and like I said before there there might be new core developers that come onto the scene that are powered by the you know um the network to do different things that we haven't even thought about today right yeah for sure yeah I think I mean I gota imagine again you you know talking to devs is that something that you're starting to see again now that we're kind of I feel like there's been like a low like crypto liil right not just a bare Market part of that piece of it but it kind of feels like we get kind of in these ruts sometimes as a industry of all the product Focus becomes on like just chasing maybe whatever is interesting and shiny but now it feels a little bit like across all chains that like products themselves are trying to come back is that something that you're seeing as you're out there talking to devs and at some of these events yeah I mean I think you know we've seen like the evolution of kind of what's been really important for the communities I mean I've been probably more focused on ethereum but like you know we can think about like the scalability problems that have been tried to been solved over the last couple years and then now I think user experience and uh interacting with the protocols is kind of a really big one you know things like chain U account abstraction and chain abstraction and making it just kind of invisible and easy for for users uh and then solving like these little but then you know you see like the rise of like warp cast or foraster uh and all these little like uh I guess real world examples of how maybe like Mass adoption might look for like web 3 and crypto and so I think the more that people Builders anyways can like utilize existing stuff that we know that works that's going to solve a problem um and not have to reinvent the wheel uh and try not to reinvent the wheel and just kind of build things that that work and are easy to use and then we'll see like a lot of adoption in the coming years um yeah and I do think it's it's definitely On The Rise um regardless of bear bull market I I don't think uh i i t of just throw that stuff away I don't even like to think about the price obviously the price is nice but really we're just like focused on building the right things right um and I think yeah that's definitely happening right now there just so many cool things that are you know coming out you know coinbase smart wallet is really good example and um yeah there's just there's just cool stuff all the account instraction stuff and you know the blobs cutting down cost for layer twos and so sure yeah there's just all sorts of cool stuff um yeah that's helping the industry moving forward awesome awesome uh before we go I wanted to do we did get a a question from the audience and maybe answer this so near near specific you know is the graph ready to handle the growing number of near shards and uh near has been growing rapidly the ton of transaction numbers have been uh high and steadily growing for a while now I'm sure you're seen this with other chains as well you know base comes on how does graph handle all of that yeah so maybe you can kind of explain a little bit about how the sharding works um because I'm not super familiar with uh sharding but maybe you can kind of give me a little preference and then I can kind of answer it yeah so uh so near is a sharted Network um and the way that the sharting works here is that as a developer you do not have to consider the sharting at all so it is it's completely uh abstracted away from the from developer and the user so if you make transactions to any contract it doesn't matter the uh the beacon part of the chain handles all of that and so each Shard essentially rolls into uh each block and so each block has has have that but what it does is it allows to you know break uh break apart congestion so that if like some of our products like uh hot wallet which is you know lots of transactions every day you know kai Ching you know we're up to like millions of transactions here uh it can be on its own Shard so it's not interrupting other contracts um but we can still have that same throughput so we're starting to see that growth onboard even more large uh I guess companies and and busy you we say high volume you know projects as well when that happens whether it's near or anyone else is that something that for the graph like you have to start to pay attention to and be aware of of how do you handle that scaling or something where like it doesn't matter all a sudden there a huge Spike you can just keep injesting and doesn't affect that yeah I mean I The Shard store is definitely an interesting one um I think for actual implementation of like data indexing with shards is yet to be seen um and tested like for like scale so I think it's one of those things yeah that maybe we'll have to think about uh and kind of like figure out ways that we can ensure data you know availability essentially of the the data that's coming off of the The Shard um and yeah I think I'd probably have to look a little bit more into uh the near shard and how it's going to specifically work and kind of how we currently do indexing you know from what I understand is we can just basically index like receipt data on near um and so yeah there could be you know an interesting situation where maybe like uh fire hose which is one of the Technologies I mentioned earlier which is power substreams is this concept of like creating fire hose in points and so if we can somehow like maybe like um you know attach the fire hose node to each of the shards that are relevant to make sure that all the data is available and and that data is available for subscription then no it shouldn't be a problem um it's just a matter of like architecturally like how we do that so um sorry for the vague answer but too too much into it it would hard be hard to say yeah no I I I mean it sounds like again I mean the the product of the graph has been R around for a long while now and it does seem like that from just at least a scaling aspect you know you guys have gotten that down to a point where that doesn't seem to be an issue now again we're not dealing with I would say you know like you know Google level of traffic right but as we as everything starts to grow in the industry is is that something that is part of the road map of of GRA of saying like hey how can we like make sure that we are actually growing in a way that allows us to handle that scale if that were to hit yeah yeah absolutely I mean that was part of the reason why we actually um had streaming fast work on the substs configuration uh and the substs solution because you know we were like I said before we're having issues with like duration of the chain and length of the chain and you know amount of data in a particular contract and you know then there's this other idea of like maybe we want to like index like everything and store it in some interesting way and so yeah I think that um yeah there's definitely going to be continued Innovation there but I think that the the first stab at like that kind of problem was was substreams um but I think that the sharding is maybe a little bit of a different story I think that's maybe architecturally a different different concept that we probably would be talking about um but yes I I as of now um you know I think it used to be that you if you wanted to index um you know the Unis swap contract I think it would take like three months to go back from the beginning and get everything and with uh substreams you know that's like 10 times faster so that's just one example of something we you know that streaming fast created um which is an amazing team by the way um to just increase that thing and so we're always thinking of different ways that we can uh we can do stuff like that and um yeah and if there's interesting things that people want to do we also have a grant process through the graph foundation and people can apply for Grants to come up with interesting new things awesome uh La last question here and uh I want for developers who want to get started uh we walk through kind of how easy it was to kind of get up and running uh what kind of like cost should people be aware of uh things that we need to make sure you know as as you get going is there a like a lower tier and then like a more advanced Enterprise setup yeah yeah yeah so I mean deploying uh anything on uh so when you use the subgraph studio you're eventually using like kind of a development test environment you know uh so you can create a subgraph you can deploy it you have this development environment for like just testing and you can use that all you want for free um it's just stuff that that edge and node is actually storing for you um and making available and then the minute that you actually want to take your subgraph and put it onto the decentral Network you do what's called publishing right and so this concept of publishing is basically you kind of got your your app and you want to move it to a production environment and you want to start quering it from the network and kind of incentivizing for indexers to pick it up and so when you publish a subgraph you usually want to signal with some GRT you can publish for free but if you want indexers to pick it up you want to submit some GRT so generally right now I think you know this kind of varies but the the current price for indexing an entire subgraph uh depending on how big it is and how complex it is is about 3,000 GRT um so you basically pay the 3,000 GRT into the contract and that kind of incentivizes all of the indexers to pick it up so as of right now if you probably did that you'd probably get at least six to 12 indexers that would be interested in picking it up and they would store it for you and then you get um 100,000 free queries per month so that's kind of a lot um you know you can kind of calate that by based on like traffic and what you expect on your um your application but you get 100,000 free queries and then after that all the queries are priced in GRT according to like the network um but it's very very cheap um you know it's probably at least like five to 10 times cheaper than if you were to like store and serve data on let's say something like AWS or like Google Cloud um and you can also get estimations so you can kind of start with that 100,000 free queries and you can kind of see how much traffic you're getting and kind of guesstimate on on what's going to be the overall cost nice how does it you mentioned like you know some of the the web 2 type of stuff how does it compare to that just like I know some hard with the price fluctuation and stuff but how would you is it on par to having to set up like you know uh something that that's on like AWS storing whatever else cheaper I mean well the nice thing is that you don't have to it's much cheaper it's a lot cheaper like I said it's about five times cheaper than if you were to do like Google Cloud plus you'd have to manage it you know what I mean um so yeah the really benefit of the graph is that you just like deploy it pay the pay that GRT and it gets picked up on the network and then you're just utilizing the token um and so yeah there's a a lot of power there and it's really easy to do and uh I think you're basically yeah you're able to save some money um and you're able to do it like with ease and not have to worry about managing the infrastructure right yeah Prett much awesome awesome uh any last things uh before uh we wrap up um yeah no I would say if anyone wants to get started you can go to the gra.com I believe it's slocs so if you go there um yeah the gra.com dos and then there's like a quick start section there so you can go on the leftand side and you can go down and it says quick start and it will teach you about like how to deploy a subgraph like it will basically answer all the questions that you might have about like how subgraph works there's tons of other videos from me and Simone and from Marcus and the devil team on the the various channels so you can find us on YouTube and yeah if you guys have problems or anything like that um feel free to reach out to me on on telegram Kevin Jones creates uh I'm on Twitter as well as cryptomaster and yeah we would love to help you and if you have any question questions at all we're here to help awesome awesome yeah thank you so much Kevin for for jumping on and explaining this I think it's uh definitely underutilized probably right now in the in the near space and so uh this was great to get this out there uh I really appreciate your time yeah I know appreciate you having me and uh yeah thanks for being such a great host Joe appreciate it all right take care thank you all right see you bye all right H that was great so let's while we have some time this episode let's kind of jump through some of the different things here that uh both you know I think Kevin brought up we can show some of that and we can also jump into some of the news that's also been happening in their ecosystem as well and uh there's been just so many things that are happening that I think it'd be nice to kind of touch on some of these parts so why don't we first start with this here so I'm going to pull this up here and how this this so we just were talking about kind of getting started so we just learned about all these great incentives and and how you can get started right away uh some of the real Parts here of hey I need to build in some I need some infrastructure for my data I want to have some stuff that is a little bit more uh personalized and things like that you know I think these are the things that you know these services like the graph are really great for developers because it takes away just as Kevin said near the end there right of like it's less stuff to worry about you don't have to manage it yourself it's getting out of the mindset of like I have to run all my own servers and things like that and so uh just as he mentioned you can jump in here you can go to the quick start you can kind of walk through here looks like they have some nice tutorials um I think it's certainly worth checking out and going there if you're already using them uh again he brought up that uh you know they need you need to be upgrading your subgraph to away from the hosted service so uh make sure you check check that out as well uh on the near front here uh lots of stuff going on and again I if you're not subscribed to the devhub newsletter uh I certainly encourage you to go and do that uh this week or this past week again a lot of stuff's been happening uh our tooling has continued to be get updated uh this is you know from week to week we're seeing incremental changes and updates uh it's something to really make sure we're staying on top of uh we did a nice little update here around if you haven't seen it yet in uh the near development space the agar app uh it does some different training and let's actually kind of jump into this a little bit because uh I didn't want to do that I want to do this there we go so uh agar app has all kinds of different courses and everything else and they have some great near courses now that are really interesting to kind of jump into this is a beginner course it gives you kind of the basics of A synchronous programming how it looks on near uh and when you jump into the course everything if you've done any kind of like developer training like uh code academy or you know Treehouse things like that you've probably seen a similar setup like this where there's some description on the leand side there you know walk you through almost like a lesson you to read through you then can go through the exercise and actually do it right here and go through all of that uh they do have additional support on Discord uh which is I think really you know again it's nice opportunity to connect with other other devs but this is a nice app and you can build your way through here you can you know uh build up some points and stuff like that they're also been highlighting here as well let's uh do this they have a a little a challenge this is even a beginner challenge Challenge and so uh you know this is something that I think is good for any developer to get acquainted with it's like a nice introduction to security right find an exploit uh in this contract and see if you can steal funds and it's rated as beginner so again it's a nice opportunity to go in and do this uh check out this app uh it's here in our newsletter linked to it but agar app. and go through some of the different things that are happening there uh if you're using coin gecko in your uh in your product uh this is something here that we just wanted to highlight uh the near Foundation uh has been awesome enough to actually go and get a paid version that can allow people who are using the coin gecko API to actually start using uh still and make sure that they don't actually lose the data that ended at the of May so we're now in June so if you haven't done this or you haven't checked on your app lately you may be missing data so uh this is a great opportunity to do that uh we provided a link if you wanted to follow up and get access to some of that uh we you know some of the again the changes here are not just developer related protocol updates and things like that we talked last week a little bit about some of the stuff that's going on around yielded execution uh there's been some different events consensus just happened so there was some great stuff happening at consensus uh again and this is something here too that if you are want to just be part of some of these things that are happening uh you can always join different protocol calls the community calls that are going on and there some information that you can jump in you can see uh so an NEP which is a near enhancement uh proposal uh those are going on regularly and you can see what what changes are are kind of coming and uh you know as the old thing says the alphas and and GitHub there and you can follow along there uh let's let's jump down a little bit so there's a lot of good stuff here some good tips uh a lot of stuff's been going on with chain abstraction uh there is a call tomorrow so if you are available but if not we record everything we put it on our YouTube but tomorrow uh so that's June 7th at 400m UTC so it's an hour before this normally airs uh same you know right now it's uh almost six UTC so uh a couple hours before that uh the chain attraction Community call you can join you can listen in you see what's being talked about uh there's here are the topics right coming up uh again this is something that is somewhat novel and we want to make sure that we're getting participation people understanding it so you can come and just listen ask questions you can again watch the the replay uh on YouTube as well uh my my one of my favorite topics that the Bounty booster here we list all that stuff uh again I'm I think I'll keep reminding everyone if you go to these events it's that time of year hackathons you know uh schools are getting out summertime and Camp camps andies and there's Bounty programs and everything else uh our Bounty booster program you use any type of near technology in your hackathon submission and you win a prize will match it uh so again I think up to $5,000 so again I really encourage you to check that out there is a lot going on in the AI space uh so here let me pull this up uh there is again a cohort happening for Horizons that is a a a equity free web 3 accelerator uh and hdn is focusing on AI projects uh near is doing a lot of AI stuff uh we just before our show uh there is a office hours you know session uh with one of the co-founders Elia talking about AI uh this is a great opportunity to learn more about uh what's going on with near AI but if you are building something and you want want to and you're there at the intersection of web 3 and AI uh there's an accelerated program that you can join for free no equity is given you have to give up you can just be part of that and go through that uh before they were focusing on AI projects in their first season uh I went through it uh with my project Shard doog and uh it was great we learned so much great information and it's uh low stress and you know high input so it's really been an exciting opportunity so I certainly encourage everyone to check that out as well some of the other things again uh again upcoming events we also have a tools Community call coming up as well that's on the 11 I encourage you to check that out uh ECC is coming up here in July then we have a couple eth Global events as well uh right after that in July as well so you know again we're we're super excited about being able to you know be part of these different events you know we'll have some showing there uh we'll talk more about those events as we get a little bit closer so uh really pretty uh exciting stuff that's really that's coming up right now before we wrap up uh again we talked with again Kevin with from the graph I I encourage everyone to take a little bit of time and check out some of the stuff that they have going on and how to get started uh there's a lot of opportunities here again as you mentioned it's free to get started and to start playing around with it you don't have to actually start paying until you actually jump in and uh you know what they consider what's called publishing you know your actual uh subgraph this is part of an your infrastructure in your dap uh and they have some interesting things going on as well they're across multiple chains uh not just near so it's a it's a good opportunity to check out some of the things that are going on there as well now as we wrap up we have a big big announcement coming next week next week we you know I I'll give you a little hint right now we are changing some of the format here to add some other segments we're still going to have guests uh but we are bringing in an additional co-host we're going to do some different activities and different uh fun stuff that goes along with being a developer learning uh understanding the crypto space better understanding the developer experience better and pulling all of this together and really livening up the live show here and adding some more stuff uh if you ever miss anything uh I really I you can always follow up uh on our our YouTube channel we stream this uh on our Twitter this is also there you can follow us on Twitch but we also cut up clips from all our episodes we put them on Twitter put them on our Instagram we put them on uh our Tik Tok and those are places that you can come find us a search near devhub and you can come find uh all our different socials and for us you know we're just trying to get the word out we want you guys to come and ask questions we want you guys to start building we want to see what you what you can do if you have any questions and you want to start building Dev support is just a click away uh through telegram that's the easiest way to get started there we always have our docs doc.org you can jump right in uh and this is an easy way to kind of just get started uh and everything lastly again uh make sure you're following us here on on Twitter there's a lot of opportunity for again for you to just kind of get involved into the ecosystem start building ask questions whatever you might maybe need to do uh but this you know we're here to support you uh as devhub building on near as we continue to grow so until next week and until our exciting new updates and everything else for next week uh I which I am very much looking forward to for everyone uh we will see you again same time next Thursday 5:00 pm UTC we'll be here live on X on YouTube on Twitch and as always uh we appreciate you coming through and just keep on buildings thanks all","transcript_synced_at":"2026-11-03T04:07:58.043Z","segments":[{"start_seconds":28,"text":"e","url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNq9VxsRMj0&t=28s"},{"start_seconds":58,"text":"e","url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNq9VxsRMj0&t=58s"},{"start_seconds":88,"text":"e","url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNq9VxsRMj0&t=88s"},{"start_seconds":118,"text":"e","url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNq9VxsRMj0&t=118s"},{"start_seconds":148,"text":"e","url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNq9VxsRMj0&t=148s"},{"start_seconds":178,"text":"e","url":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNq9VxsRMj0&t=178s"},{"start_seconds":208,"text":"e
