stop the music so abruptly but hey we are back here with another wake up in chipm more I am your host Joe uh thank you so much for joining us today uh got a fun little episode uh if you saw the title I have some perspective uh we're going to talk about some developer perspectives today and it all was born out of uh a blog post I read uh if you kind of don't already do this uh I subscribe to multiple newsletters still I think email newsletters is still a great uh place to get information there's people doing some like curating for you and there some great developer newsletters out there to check out um and I came across this blog post that we're going to talk a little bit about today uh again as usual up top I want to talk a little housekeeping and some other fun stuff that's going on in their ecosystem uh there's a lot of great news coming out if you haven't seen uh so the validator set just got updated to Nightshade 2.0 uh there's some good information about that there'll be um some content coming out next week more about that and what that really means for the larger ecosystem what it means as the developer to build on uh on near going from there uh there's a lot of good stuff if you want to just build on near period right now of how that looks uh secondarily I think you know now is a great opportunity to start looking into what's available here on on on near specifically uh especially with the AI stuff and some of the chain abstraction things because there is a redacted hackathon that starts in September it runs eight weeks there's 500k or more in prizes um so the link is all down below so on the ticker down below we have that also make sure that you sign up to our newsletter at devhub uh we have a great newsletter comes out every single week with all the news around the ecosystem uh tailored for developers so it's focused on the things that you need as a developer to keep building in the ecosystem lastly uh race of sloth if you are contributing to any of the open source stuff here especially on near but we are expanding it out towards other projects across the you know we'll say the larger near Universe uh you can earn points and uh it's a great leaderboard to jump on it's a great way to be recognized for your contributions to open source uh so check out race of SLO lastly uh if you are watching this on replay or you just want to have a conversation sep separately uh you can join the telegram group for wake up and ship more uh it's just down the link is down below too as well scrolling there I encourage you to check all of that out it's dried on here today all right so let's talk a little bit about um today's topic and I want to uh follow up a little bit from the last episode so we talked again a lot of the talk has been so far again around different parts of shipping we talked about the details last time of what it takes actually get a product into production things like that and a theme that I keep feeling like I'm going back to a lot which I I hope is helpful and from just some anecdotal feedback of talking to people offline is that it seems to be resonating is that the you know introspective part of being a developer of the part of actually thinking through the work that you're doing having some you know perspective hence the the title of this episode and having some actual opinions that form how you do your work is a really important piece to being a developer it's not just about writing code so actually I want to jump in and talk a little about this blog post that uh I came across recently so uh Evan Han uh he's a developer uh he's been working a lot of different projects uh I won't get into his whole CV but he has an extensive experience doing a lot of different things uh and he he writes a good amount he has a really nice blog talking about all different things as a developer and in July he wrote this post is my programming Bel as of July 2024 couple things here I think that are really relevant and why I'd liked this blog post a lot and why I want to talk about this blog post and kind of some of my own thoughts around it so one as a developer I like that he kind of phrased it as like here's where I am today because where you are today could be different than where you are tomorrow obviously and could be very different than how you felt about 5 years ago and the benefit of something like this especially if you write it and even if you don't want to share it as a blog post even if you keep it internally hopefully when you can see your own growth which I think is like a really powerful piece to see how far you've come but also again I think it helps inform how you make decisions both in your career as well as the products that you make so we're going to talk a little bit about all the different features that are here and I think this will I think this will be beneficial to hopefully a lot of people uh going through this so uh well let me actually go back a little bit here so he lists out all these different things and I'm not going to read the whole blog post and there are some things that stuck out and so I want to highlight some of the things that stuck out to me but I also want to talk a little bit about where my own perspective lies and how this relates to again all the stuff that we've been talking about the first Nine episodes so far and what it really means to be a developer especially in 2024 what it means to be a developer working with some you know ambiguity around like what's going to happen with AI uh you know what does it mean to work on all these different new technologies all that different stuff so let's kind of just jump into some of these different things uh I'm going to kind of some of this is like paraphrase some of this is actually directly from his blog but I thought it would be helpful to kind of highlight some of these quotes and talk through some of this uh again you can always ask questions in the chat uh so feel free to comment on this and I I'll I'll take questions if they come uh also again too if you are watching this on replay you can also bring up questions in the telegram group as well so uh one of the first things that really sck out to me is he brings up something called uh something around uh different approaches for different tasks teams and projects and uh I love this because this is something that you know when I when I've had to you know hire whether it's uh you know a new developer who's coming out of college or it's an intern who's still in college and you know they have this great knowledge base of how to like write code and how to be a computer programmer and you know computer you know software engineer and they have this really excellent academic background what they are sometimes missing is the part around like uh what it actually means to like ship a product and that's kind of what I've been trying to highlight here with this whole show of like you know you actually have to do certain things to actually ship products it's more than just being a good coder and he gives a great example here it would be irresponsible to build a pacemaker with an automated test because people could get hurt people could literally die um but if you're just trying to like try something on the weekend if you're experimenting to get caught up around like having automated testing for whatever you're working on also like doesn't make sense at the same time so the thought of like oh automated tests are have to always be there like that's like my belief is like oh I believe in testing every you know having 100% code coverage for everything actually doesn't make sense because it really is dependent on what you're building so I I I think that's a important piece the last sentence though is one that I think more developers hopefully should take into account and I really hope that they try to internalize themselves because the developers where I've had clashes with before are ones that are very stuck in their ways and really have this uh absolute belief around like what is actually a good code and I do think you need to be able to have perspective around good code means something different in different context and you need to understand like what is the problem that you're solving for at that moment and it is the code good for that not just in general uh because otherwise like you just get caught up in this whole mindset that everything has to you know it's it's all about like having the super clean code constantly and you know and I'm writing you know this amazing you know the best code you've ever seen 247 and I'm a super developer and like awesome but like can you actually still ship stuff that's relevant from that as well so that's where I think that's part of that I also think this is what starts to separate uh you know we we haven't talked really much about it yet on this show and I plan to but like what it means to like have different levels of developers like you hear terms like Junior developer midlevel senior things like that uh this is stuff that I think starts to separate you know younger less experienced developers to more experienced developers things like that uh the next one again I'm a I'm an advocate of this obviously here too of like if I'm banging my head against a problem without making progress I should take a break and this was a great little quote from his blog where it's like if there's so many times where like it's so simple and that's why like sometimes separate set of eyes is so important of just like it might be minor that like you just miss something it's a typo it's something small um maybe it's like you're just not thinking clearly about how to solve the problem and powering through it like almost never works you really need to be able to step back and take that break um and once you learn to do that and learn to recognize like when you should do that like that is the part that I think is super powerful because uh and it's something again you know I've been programming for a long time now I I am not always perfect on this but I've gotten much better of knowing like I need to stop I need to take a break and that that break might be like I don't know like it could be 10 minutes it could be an hour it could be a day it could be a week if you really need it uh but you need to find find where that break fits so I think that's a really important piece uh this one now this is kind of complex and even though it sounds like a simple statement distinction between simple and easy is important and I want to take this even a step further uh when you also apply this to how it feels for your end user when you're building something there's actually an important distinction as well so right he writes the simple is the opposite of complex easy is something else it's familiar uh understanding distinction helped him be uh developed software better uh but he felt like he still has ways to go on this and I think that's a a lot of developers probably feel that way but also at the same time like you need to understand that um when we say something is simple right it means that like you know we're trying to refine some part of our code or a process whatever else easy means like yeah we can get it done I usually see it like we can get it done quickly um there's no challenge to it simple can still actually have a challenge to it and when you apply simple also to like your end product that it actually can be uh sometimes hard to do so it's not necessarily easy so to make something really simple whether it's through your code or whatever else it might be can actually really be something where like it's hard to implement because it's a lot more work and a lot more thought that has to go into something to make it feel super simple uh for both you and the end user so this is where something that I think is like really important to take that time and consider like what is something when I say when I'm using these words about my product or what I'm working on is something actually simple is something actually easy and and you know if I want something to be simple what does that mean for me in the work I'm doing is it just the code work is simple or am I trying to make it simple for the end user which actually might be hard to do not easy uh okay so this one here uh about documenting code so I I I don't even know like I could probably do like three episodes on documentation um but let's start with like just some things to thinking about what documentation really means so one documentation is for a few different people but most importantly the way that like you need to always think about it is like documentation is for your future self okay so you might be a solo Dev and you might plan to always be a solo Dev your plan might be like look I want to build a product that becomes a lifestyle business for me and I will always be able to just work on these different things and it's for me and I am the only developer who will ever touch this and so that's fine that's great and that's a it's a it's a awesome uh goal and it's a very it's achievable goal but when you still have to document everything and the reason why is because as time goes on like it's impossible to really memorize a lot of this stuff it's impossible to really understand like why you made certain decisions so the first thing I always think of is like my documentation needs to be for my future self and if nothing else you know from whether it's for my you know when it's for my you know if I can write it For My Future Self then like I am I'm going to be in a good spot and then other people can then actually use it and so like the way I try to think about it you know is like is like this right so I have a couple different parts of my code here right so the the first part might be is like you know who's the audience okay and this is kind of hard to see this orange here's a different color here sorry for the clicking didn't mean to make this like a ASMR video but um okay so like who is going to read it and even if it's for myself you know I think he highlights a couple things here that you know I think are are are really are really smart and he breaks it down like this you know there's obviously explosive documentation right like so the traditional like you know I'm going to publish this whole set of documentation or even if it keep for myself um but like I think there's like simple ways of thinking about this as well of like hey have I just named my functions and my variables like really well uh he gives a couple of different examples throughout the blog and he has links to some other blogs about this stuff where he talks a little bit about like um you know uh what's where I think about this like he says you know you want to have your variables be like positives like don't use double negatives make sure like it's clear like what's happening things like that um how you break up your code is some part of your documentation uh having comments like that's like really easy way like just put a little note for yourself right uh and then like what are your log messages we talked about this last week you know like do do my logs actually explain like what's actually happening things like that so I really want to be able to think through like you know who's that if it's for other people okay it starts to change a little bit of like what my expectations are because now I probably need to have a a little bit more explicit okay and I probably need to have if you guys can hear the dog barking in the background but so uh so let's see here let's you know if I say okay I want to be explicit about this stuff great that's fine if you know because I'm I'm going to need that for other people but then again in here like this is like where comments are really important because not everybody needs to see all the stuff in your documentation but in the comments I probably do need to see like again like what was my decision making you know like why did I come to X Y and Z thing here let's pause right here real quick uh and let me go see what's going with the duck be right back e e e e e all right we're back sorry about that where were we all right so talking about other people I if you're curious about what just happened with the dogs I just had to go out for a moment so that happens I guess um so explicit documentation and and here's why this is important when you're dealing with others is because again they have no other context of the actual building process and I think that's important so this is where I think like you need to start tying in your process and decision making as well as like what does this code actually do to tie into that let's go the next one okay this is this is a uh maybe controversial one but for some people controversial just in the sense of like I think as as a developer like so many of us spend so much time doing this um I do this we all do this so tweaking my setup has limited benefits it's fun um it's kind of like one of those like nerdy Pursuits that I think a lot of developers like to do it definitely feels like you're trying to hyper optimize for things which I think is you know sometimes important um by hyper optimize I just mean like basically what you're trying to do is you know you're trying to make yourself as productive as possible I'm trying to you know find deficiencies in you know everything that everything that I'm trying to do right I'm trying to write code faster I'm trying to you know ship quicker I want to minimize the time I'm you know using my mouse I'm trying to you know all the different things that we do I want it to look good I want to want to feel cool as I develop whatever it is the thing is like some of these things might have minor benefits um you know maybe like code completion maybe like some of the coloring might help a little bit of like how you are able to back go back and read some of your code but the reality of it is like it's going to be minor and I think you know uh I'm not saying don't do it like it's still like fun but like don't expect huge results and huge Boost from it and like do understand you know what what it actually is that you're trying to get out of it um and it's it's not the productivity the timesaver thing that really you think is going to be uh so like have fun with it like you know it's it's cool to do don't get too caught up in it don't do it like during um you know I would say do not do it like if it's going to be in spite of like you getting your actual work done like it's not going to help you like have any kind of measurable type of uh update from there uh this is a a good one so you know again the loan developer problem uh it is again this goes back to the documentation one so like when I was talking here you know how do you how do you document your code and who's it for who's the end audience right so like let's you know here like let's you know again who's this going to be for right is this is a comments just enough who's going to actually see this and a lot of the times right we need to consider of like you know even when working by ourselves there's a couple different things that happen happened one is that it's so easy to get in a mode where like your code is just not maintainable anymore um but by besides anyone besides yourself and it's because you acquire technical debt it's because you do things in a way that make sense to you but you have not documented them uh it's also a lot of times where you've now made decisions uh uh obviously unilaterally because just yourself but like you have not given enough thought to why you made some of these decisions and so now for someone else to come in um there's again there's just no context there so this is something where I really think it's super important that you're taking that time to recognize this and be very clear on like as the loan developer right and in ask someone who's working by themselves you know can I maintain it myself that's why you have to Doc for yourself even and like if I do ever need to hand this off like am I going to be able to and you need to ask yourself that like early on because the further you get into it the harder it's going to be to go back and fill that back in and that can happen even in like a small company where like let's say there's you know three four five of you but like there's only like one developer or even like two developers uh it's really easy for that to happen so it's something that you really should consider early on and really take that time to like break down um what's the best way to kind of put this like you really take the time to make sure that you are setting yourself up for success to hand off the code but also like for your success for like even just for yourself of like if I were to step away from it for 6 months and then come back to it could I actually do that that and if you can answer that question for yourself you could probably hand off your code as well if you can't then you need to take it the time to do some of that stuff as well all right let's jump into another one here I I this is you know again I I want to um this is something where if I'm interviewing developers um to come work for me with me whatever it might be uh if I'm talking to different developers about like where they are in their career uh you know and just trying to get a sense of like their actual experience people who are tied to simple opinions are often ones who are fairly inexperienced uh it's a clear giveaway that like you do not you have not had the longer large enough experience in like actual production code and working in the you know we'll call it the like real world type of thing to do and the reason why is because like so the example that this author gives is like you know people say oh PHP sucks and listen I've heard all the PHP jokes whatever else um PHP also like paid my paid all my bills for a long time um because it was the you know what it was very commonly used and it was very easy to hire people to come and work on the code and uh it it it did what it was supposed to do and it's fine it was not the most elegant language it had had a lot of weird quirks uh it's gotten better over the years in some in some forms and that's what it is reality of it was and is like PHP is still around a lot PHP uh can previously especially like with the beginning of like a lot of the bigger web 2 companies coming up we all like PHP um and so like it's something like that where you just like flat out like oh this is stupid and this goes for any language like any language like if someone's just like oh this language sucks like that's okay sure like you can you can start maybe with that thing of just like saying it in a you know jokingly man whatever else but like if you're going to have like a real discussion about it like you need to have more than just that I also think that people who get too caught up in like programming practices again and this is something from his blog and I totally agree with this of like if you are completely dogmatic about a process um yeah sure you're going to be right maybe in a lot of situations but you're not going to always be right and as soon as you are tied to like I am going to always be caught up in the like I believe this is the way there is no other way it's like okay well one I don't really want to work with you and two like you are not ready to handle adversity you are not ready to handle the realities of like how do I get something in the hands of more users I'm not ready to scale I'm not ready to do any of these different things because I'm so caught up in my own dogmatic beliefs so this last sentence I kind of uh reframed a little bit um from his blog but I I this is kind of how I truly feel about this is that those who use nuance and understand these trade-offs are much better to work with in any form whether it's from a cons consultation standpoint whether you're working them in as a a colleague uh whatever it might be to work with developers who understand that is again also a sign of maturity it's a sign of of that someone is who more likely to be a mid to senior level developer and that's when we talk about these different tiers of developer those who understand those nuances are much more like that to now you could be very experienced you could be let's say you've been programing for 10 15 20 years if you have these like really dogmatic approaches and you are very caught up in like this has to be the particular way then you know it still highlights of like some inexperience like yes you may be an excellent excellent programmer you may have great code you may be able to do some really creative things but it would worry me on a larger team that or any kind of team that has to then actually ship production code regularly in a fast environment because you know we get caught up in that uh this one I I I've been harping on this and this is a great way it's been phrased um I haven't really said it quite like this on previous episodes but uh I I I want to you know we should you know frame this to any any developer team really and like this is something that should always come up in like a developer interview especially too of like you know how much of your you know what percentage you think of your job is actually like coding and this is even more so now with like how good AI is getting at programming this still makes mistakes and still like it's not perfect but like it's cutting out a lot of time for people between code completion as well as like full on blocks of code from AI so that's somewhat actually the easiest part of the job really and I I I am in full agreement with this author of like the bigger challenge is like reading other people's code like reviewing code doing code reviews is a huge part of that uh PRI prioritization is like I mean and I it's something that I am continually working on I think most developers will tell you that they're constantly fighting this of like how do you determine what's a priority how do you start to reframe that um things like that you know what order should I be doing things in that is a challenge constantly it does not it gets easier to some degree but not always uh it's definitely situationally dependent communication how do you communicate to your users how to communicate to your colleagues how do you work whether especially if it's like asynchronous how do you do that um all stuff Team Dynamics like all these other parts that go into like sh shipping software that is not it's not just the code that's what I've been trying to hopefully get across everybody here is like it's so much more complicated than just like writing good code and so this is the stuff that I think is like super important and I really hope that uh you know this is if you learn nothing else you understand that like coding is just a tiny piece of the puzzle to actually shipping stuff to production okay with that being said uh you need to set aside time to just mess around there's a reason why for years and I don't know if they still do I assume they still do it but like Google used to have this 20% time where Google that their developers you know their Engineers 20% of their time could be on whatever they could experiment so many good things have come out of that there's a lot of good anecdotes of like different products coming out of that but it's a great way to learn you have to just like try to different stuff and it's a great way to both learn new technologies it's also a great way to like learn how to problem solve as well of like can I can I think differently about something can I go through something and try something a little bit different so like sometimes like making useless stuff is a great way to go about it uh and it really can set you up for long-term success maybe nothing comes obviously out of what you just kind of hacked on that's that's what's great I also think this is why like going to to hackathons if you can is or participating in them even online are a great exercise because it forces you into this box of like I have this particular window of time I have these particular requirements and restraints what can I do and so all of that kind of fits together of this of like hey let's just see and it doesn't always have again the the idea in all these situations is not about productivity it's really about like learning and experiencing and going through stuff the last one here and I think this is super important and if you are building in in like web 3 in crypto I hope this is something you're considering and this is what I think why people who are in the space get frustrated by a lot of the like sometimes the meme coins and like the defy and all that other stuff of like what are you actually trying to build for am I just trying to build to you know make money and build up a profit or that's fine but I think you if you're really serious about this stuff and you're really serious about being a developer that is going to contribute to the world in the long term uh it matters who you build for and like what you're actually building and I think you can Tak this a few different ways not everything has to be altruistic necessarily like I'm not saying that everything has to be as a positive for the the the good of humanity but you need to know who your audience is and who you want to build for and uh if you if you are building for you know DG to go onto you know a meme coin platform you need to understand that like that's your audience and that will come with some different positives and negatives and maybe a lot of negatives in the long term but that's important it goes the other way too of like you know am I building something that's actually going to benefit people and by me building this defi product does it allow people who would not have access to funds or to banking or to whatever else you know does that change that what am I really doing also too of like you know am I doing stuff that is going to harm somebody else right uh the work that you do can have consequences depending on what you're working on and you both need to be okay with those and you need to understand those because and again this is not necessar a morality thing I don't it's it can be that but it's also about like just in general how we start to determine you know how we make product decisions as well and so when those things are there like that that's really important and I I'll go all the way back to uh here right it goes back to this like you know second one here that we talked about like or first one here talked about of like you know there's different approaches for different tasks like so you know if I'm building software for a pacemaker then like there's that's a particular thing I need to know who that's for I need to know who's interacting with that and you know it matters that he also phrased this though for himself as like he wanted to do stuff that he felt was a net benefit for Humanity that the work that he did was always hopefully improving Humanity in some form that it was not taking from if that's important to you then you need to have that as your ethos and you need to consider that if that's not important to you then you need to think about like why am I building this right you need to have some reasoning and it might be just be like I need a paycheck so I'm doing this right and like the correlation here is like sometimes you'll hear like actors talk about this right like I I did this movie because I needed a paycheck I knew it wasn't going to be a good movie but I needed a paycheck you know and you can understand that as somebody who's working but then at the same time like you know are they just doing paychecks okay paycheck jobs like that's great and then that's a choice and that's fine like you have to support yourself you have to support your family um there's nothing wrong with that so then you need to prepare yourself and you need to to be ready in a certain way you need to think about like what your audience is in that manner as well whereas if you are you know I want to make things that are focused on art as a actor you know and I want more you know art and independent films okay that like that matters too then you need to think about like how are you making your choices around all of that and will that sacrifice a paycheck in order to do that which it might same thing here in software like sometimes the work that you do is a net benefit to humanity and maybe you don't get that paycheck and that you think should come along with that that's a separate discussion good bad or indifferent but that's a choice that you make you need to understand that and you need to make sure that you've that's a choice that you feel comfortable with but also too like if that's your goal is to build St for that's pushing Community forward um then that needs to be the focus and that needs to be you have to be understand that and be okay with that and and I think that's a really awesome Pursuit and sometimes that maybe comes later in people's career maybe come you know it comes early in people's career when they maybe need less money maybe they've already made money but you can sometimes also do both and if you want to do both uh you just have to think through of like where am I working what am I working on um what can I control myself stuff like that I think all this stuff is super important I I really think that having a belief system is super important I'll go back to the first slide here uh I encourage you to check out his blog uh read the whole thing uh a great exercise it would be like try to write one of these yourself you know like can you write this out yourself can you take the time to do this for yourself because I think you'll find a lot of interesting things about yourself when you go through this and it will help you immensely if you are a younger developer to one like hopefully remove some of your biases but to like when you go to that interview and you are trying to move up in your career to have perspectives that you can easily talk about perspectives that you understand and they can be bad like you they can be things that you need to improve on you can say listen like maybe your perspective is like you have a very dogmatic approach to like test driven development you are that person that's you know again while I disagree with having that being a dogmatic approach if that is your perspective like then own it and talk about it and and explain it and explain why you that is the only way and why that you feel that everyone should follow that and that's an important piece of that because if someone's going to have a discussion with you uh again especially around if you're trying to go like for a job or whatever and you can't explain yourself that's almost that's like like a double whammy of like not only do you have this like really uh narrow view of something but you also can't explain why and it's like well okay you haven't you haven't done the work you haven't put the effort in to understand yourself as AI mailbag coming up pretty soon uh we have some other topics next week too around again just some more stuff of getting stuff to production also dealing with feedback we talked a little bit about feedback previously we talk some more about uh handling feedback and actually how to handle like support and things like that as well and uh if you have suggestions if you have things you want me to
