what you want want want want all right we are live we are just kind of winging it today uh we got a short episode for you because there is a really great live stream coming up here at the bottom of the hour with uh Ilia the founder of near protocol and the hot team um and they're going to be talking about uh so many different topics around chain abstraction building on near bunch of different stuff here so I want to not interfere with that but Owen yeah they're gonna outshine us for sure yeah I I didn't want to try to compete with that but I did want to just kind of check in with some things this is the last day of the hackathon uh so I wanted to make sure that we kind of did a quick check in what are your initial thoughts of how this hackathon has went without seeing any actual projects yet well that's the thing can we can we cut that music I can't hear myself thing is it is it still going I think I can hear a little bit okay uh there we are there we are um yeah well earlier today I went to look at the submissions but I saw that I couldn't see the submissions yet um I was excited to see yeah like what people were building already and I think still like half of uh the people who have started like a project project on haven't submitted that yet I saw Maria saying that so I think a lot of people are busy trying to submit last minute and well I'm also hacking so I still need to submit tonight and it's 11 11 p.m. here so I think I'll be up till like 2: 3 a.m. we'll see yeah we five hours left of building yeah but I think I think it's gone well like a lot of cool stuff uh being built it seems I've had message with a few people just because I'm interested in what they're building um and yeah a lot of the office hours we had more people than usual today because last last minute fixes and well the dev chats have been crazy as well recently so I think everyone's buckling down last minute totally and I just think the these kind of hackathons give opportunities to like explore new things and so I think we've certainly seen a lot uh a lot of that as well too which has been great I mean I was looking at the stats this morning and like our unique users to our docs here at near is up about 20% month over month uh which is a really nice bump uh so people are definitely checking things out yeah yeah for sure and it's yeah it's being busy and hope hope some of these these people stick around um and have been like inspired by what they're buil doing and and continue to do it yeah yeah for sure uh so a couple things just real quick we'll just kind of summarize if you haven't seen already about five hours left to submit your project uh there is some particular requirements um so make sure you're following all of the different guidelines for submissions and everything it's all right here on the main page of devpost uh and I think that's going to be an important piece as well that you are following all that stuff so the judges can properly evaluate your project but there is $700,000 in prizes so uh a lot of opportunities you can apply to multiple things so make sure you're doing so uh for that uh so I wanted to highlight something else here um while we're just kind of chatting let me just bring up my screen so if you people are not already I'm going to share this and I'm going to then share this if you're not subscribed to our newsletter that our own Owen curates each week uh I I highly encourage you to sign up for it uh there is so much great stuff that's in here all the time uh and this week was no different they go resize that a little bit uh some of the great stuff here is that like we always make sure to provide know changes in any kind of different release on SDK things like that but few few people were few people were running into like errors because they updated to think rust 1.82 which like n cor isn't supporting yet but um but yeah we got a new new like cargo update out there and works spaces so if you you upgrade to that your problem should should float to away yeah yeah and that's why just subscribing is just good to know because we'll always have that stuff in here um but there's some cool stuff in here too and uh things that are happening that you we encourage people to kind of check out uh so there's a new C API Library uh which is really pretty cool because having something in C really opens up for you to start building pretty creative stuff whether it's Hardware related like Wi-Fi routers or even like building uh console level games uh you could s to really leverage you're in a whole different way with that kind of Library yeah Damian who who like started to author that he really wants to see someone build something in like a a Wi-Fi router or sorry router um so yeah and and and iler was suggesting that someone tried to run a node on their router which would be interesting and I thought like hey it's like internet Network and the blockchain network it goes quite nicely it could be a good use case yeah yeah always we in this newsletter there's always like two or three people that keep cropping up like I think the past five five editions or whatever we've had the key pom team in there because they just been pushing out so much and historically we've always had some stuff about uh like fastner is always always in there so you can really see which teams are putting stuff out but this one I just put together today was there wasn't that much going on this week maybe people were just busy in for redacted so I uh I got to put my own got to put my own tweet in there to fill it up you know nice yeah I think that's uh I think it's a good point here too to show people like if you are building something on near this does not have to come from somebody who's part of one of the near teams this newsletter is open for all Dev so if you're doing something cool we're happy to highlight and you know get you uh featured in our newsletter we you know come talk about it on here on the pot and I think there's you know we want to make sure that we that you can feel like you can get your you know what you're doing out there you don't have to just build by yourself so um yeah for sure we want to showcase like cool projects and especially stuff that is going to help like other other people build I I really want this to be a place where you can just like sort of like a recap of all the all like the resources and happenings that can like help you and hopefully each thing in there maybe relevant to like your project or whatever um and just discovering something uh can be could be invaluable really yeah and that's and that's kind of what the whole vibe is here and um again all the stuff that you know you might want to know and follow along with is all all in here uh one of the things that I think from just a devhub standpoint that we certainly want to highlight is and you know we'll go here uh big changes uh happening on the dev portal uh they've been here for a little bit we kind of silently released these but getting started has never really been easier as it says right here never contract never been easier chain abstraction web three apps using as a data solution all the stuff is right here as a developer to get started uh so even if you miss the hackathon you you're interested in trying to build see what's available uh dev. n.org is recently updated and there's just some really great stuff here to get going and you could see that there's some like it's still being built so there's a few gaps that you can see that are ready to be filled and one I saw for the first time today if you like expand that bar out to the left um yeah the web 3 architectures that's what what I think think would be really cool I suppose like explaining how products are built right and what components they're using because I've not really seen this these resources anywhere particularly on to do with n and maybe the wider um wider crypto world because it's like when you're building a project a lot of the time you don't even know what components will fit into it you think hey I'm building a smart I'm building a project on blockchain just write a smart contract right and then oh yeah I got to have a front end for that oh wait I can't just keep making a million RPC calls through my front end I'm going to need an index um yeah and then I'm going to need some like other offchain database and then hey I want to onboard my users better let's add a relayer and um oracles and what y yeah I uh I mean I'm am very interested and passionate around the concept of treating web 3 as a solution and not trying to just like build you know build on crypto for the sake of building on crypto and so if you're really serious about building a product you need to think about how stuff fits in and so having a piece where we can better highlight for people where these components can fit into your project and think about project first uh will really be I think really beneficial to developers and we're open to feedback if you have like questions that you would like to see in these docs uh better answered uh that's stuff that like we certainly want to hear yeah for sure I I'd love to see in that section like where we we always talk about sweat and Kai ching and hot as being like the prime examples of use cases to follow on there but then it's like how how do you follow him so hopefully we can explain that there yeah that's a great point right it's like yeah you hear like how does sweat actually integrate it like what part of sweat is actually using crypto what part is not um how much of their own infrastructure do they run uh that's something that we certainly could do better job of helping explain and it's certainly kind of a black box for a lot of people so for sure yeah and do you see it being like so you could talk about like the architecture as a whole do you see there being a place or in there or elsewhere where it can sort of go into like the architecture of say a smart contract alone because well there's I I think a lot of people don't know whether their contracts are like production ready or like ready for an audit whether they think it's good enough for an audit yet like like I think about my own code so it it' be interesting to compare it with like how how other other audited and and production ready companies are going about their contracts specifically I think that's a great question and that's something that probably I'm guessing a lot of developers face where it's like how how how does the work I'm doing stack up to other things because it's so easy to get in your own head of like oh this isn't production ready oh this is just crap code you know I I don't and you don't feel necess always super confident and uh the simple tip is usually like it's probably better than you think um most of the time and some of the code that you think is probably Pro really awesome is probably worse than you really have it in your head uh it's one of those things where like just because something works really great or like there's a reputation for a team it doesn't mean like that the code is at this like epic God level space and so just knowing like when the right timing I think is is super important and you probably are waiting too long half time so uh good good good questions good questions there that that being said I do like this Snippets of code that I always and like repos that I always go back to to sort of see how to structure like my work for example well there was the the gas station and the nft chain Keys which um I I don't believe there's like a PR pending but I don't believe it's updated to like the newest interface yet but even so uh like Jacob who offer those contracts it's like a great rust Dev and I'm always just go back to that repo and see like how is he doing these these cross contract calls to the to the MPC and like how is he getting the result back um so I do I do love to to look at like good projects and and see how they are doing it as as inspiration and sort of compare and then I can hope that my my code is quy you know yeah uh one of the things that um I learned a while back in like web 2 based software audits um but the same thing applies here for like smart contracts is that the best thing to do is if you think you're going to need an audit so you're doing something like Financial based is whoever is going to possibly be your auditor is have a conversation with them of like where before you even like have that like send over your stuff and the you know what you're paying for kicks in and everything else just have that conversation of like look I don't feel super strong in this area um you know I this all works but I'm a little you know a little unsure of X Y and Z and that just helps them frame a little bit better too of like how to better evaluate your work I mean they're going to evaluate it anyway as their own way to do that audit but then when they provide that feedback to you that you hopefully have an auditor who's going to actually not just say like this is wrong or you need to patch X Y and Z but also like hey here are some things that we feel are better practices not every auditor will do that uh most will but not all will and so it's good to have just some that be open have a conversation audits maybe also feel scary but like do you have a chance like it's it's there to help you and so like almost no one passes an audit like their first shot like that just doesn't happen so it's okay to like have mistakes and then have to fix them and remediate them yeah well well when you were saying like most will say hey this is like a better practice with me I always thought it was like hey you just you got to fix this um like this is this is wrong and that's why I was thinking like maybe some people some projects might want to think about like a soft audit do you think that's a good idea or not because like you don't want to spend Millions well not Millions but like thousands on like a proper audit if it's not ready so good question um again a little bit of it comes down to like who your auditor is and and um yeah so a lighter audit of just again depending on cost and everything else where you can have someone come in and look at your general code and give you some best practices feedback anything that is like glaring that's super obvious um like that can give you all the initial feedback to clean up and then go to proper audit sometimes that's not always feasible maybe we don't know the right people to be able to do that so you have to go straight to an auditor the conversation when you are vetting Auditors because you need to do that like work yourself like you also have to vet your different Auditors and talk to multiple of them you have to audate the Auditors yeah you have to say and like like how much is this going to cost like what kind of report do you give me you can ask for a sample report and say like what's a typical report you give somebody um so in a lot of the ones especially like in web 2 with financial stuff where they would give you like different categories of stuff like here is like you know red like you have to fix this is a critical vulnerability you need to you cannot ship to production with this and then like you have yellow which is like you need to fix this but it it's not critical um you know the recommendation would still be not to go to production with it and then you usually get like a whole another set of items that are like these are just best practices these are just things that you should be aware of here's how you should change certain things these are not necessarily explo able vulnerabilities but you know for long term whatever you know these are things you know pay attention to maybe upgrades whatever it might be uh testing cases all that stuff so and if they won't do that and they're just going to give you back like hey fix X Y and Z uh I would probably move to somebody else because that's that doesn't still a ton of confidence in me either of like oh this is a good audit well I read a few a few audits um before and they were I think they were all like yeah this medium vulnerability High vulnerability and and whatever I remember when I was trying to like pick my longterm wallet that I was going to put my put my ledger into for for near Eco that I was looking like all the wallets AIT yeah yeah totally yeah I mean like and that's and that's why you want to talk to different uh Auditors just to see like hey you know what can you provide me um but don't be afraid of them like they for it's always like the thing that like as bad as you maybe feel about you don't feel confident about like your St say oh this is be like the worst stuff they've ever seen like trust me like unless their auditor is brand new like they have seen horrible stuff like there's no like you know so never feel like you have provided something that is really terrible um you know get it out there uh and again part of your package is remediation on an audit so it is something where again they're going to give you back that feedback you can go fix it and they will review again that should be all part of the deal if that is not part of the package they're providing to you then I I don't know that that that's a red flag for me that this oh you don't have to you don't have to pay for that separately most of the time you will like get a sec or review in it or yeah there should be like in your initial package when you sign up with an auditor like there should be it's typically like one remediation review like you know sometimes they'll do they'll say you get one or two you know depending on that but like there there should be at least one review post remediation as part of that package there's probably you know again how that is invoiced you know they may say you don't have to pay it until you submit it but um that should be agreed upon ahead of time the reason why you want to agree upon ahead of time too is because sometimes Auditors get very busy and so if you are on a time crunch and you they put you into a slot you know you should then also ask of like hey if you provide me remediation by this time and I remediate within this window does my does my thing stay at the top um because that's the other part of that too which can happen is you submit to an audit it happens your immediate but now you're at the back of the queue again and now you're waiting you know two three months before it gets through an audit again that's always not necessarily ideal so these are all pieces that you need to have as part of the conversation just as any business deal would be it's really uh really insightful to be honest I'm glad we have no guest you are the guest no I think but I love I love these kind of questions because like uh you know i' I've been in the same spot you know just doing software different you know for too long now um You just these are things you don't think about that are uh relevant to people because you know you forget that you know people have't experience through all this different stuff and it is scary like and especially when you see the price of audits like when you get that initial in like you know a quote for an audit you're like it's better be good so yeah you know yeah something to be aware of yeah I think well when when launching like my own product I'm thinking like yeah we we probably gotta raise some money um before we can go through an all that I don't I don't think I have that sitting in my back pocket just just to give out but some people some people can do it reasonably easy I think so that's a we can end kind of I want to I don't want to overlap too much of the thing starting soon but that's one other good piece here too this is hopefully helpful for developers um so when you think about when you raise money the first time whether it's like an angel investment uh first round whatever friends and family whatever it might be typically that initial fund raise is actually not for you to support yourself it's for you to like get your stuff organized it's probably to hire a lawyer temporarily to organize some things it's probably to pay for an auditor it's probably to you know uh maybe go through some other like legal processes of like maybe I'm registering a business maybe whatever that might be all that initial money is actually going there and that's the mistake that sometimes uh developers who are becoming business owners get into of like oh well I need to pay my devs and I need to pay myself and it's like yes you do absolutely you do like that is very important as well but a lot of times that initial money actually has to go to these things that are these hard costs that are unfortunately like of how business works and especially if you're doing something Financial based like you have to have these things in place or else like you're really on the hook for some of this stuff and again if you're doing something Financial where you need an audit you probably need a legal entity around you so you're not the one getting sued if something happens so uh yeah and I think it's even even more risky in in crypto when it's like it's not just even if the code goes bad but you know there's a lot of a lot of regulation in the space so yeah I think we have higher legal costs than a lot of other Industries oh for sure I I mean that's absolutely and that's so something to consider like some you know if you're building up your project as you're ready to go live as ready to get serious um that is stuff that you just need to consider of what those costs will be and that's where your initial money will probably go to uh so sometimes it's a little bit of a a hard pill to swallow but if you're really serious about what you're building um that's what it takes you know yeah awesome okay should we wrap up here not to disturb the other live stream yeah so I just wanted to end on a little bit uh so the actual in you know iral event of redacted is coming up super fast here uh it's something that uh if you going to I I think he's going to be a really great time I unfortunately will not be there but Owen you you've been pretty much on location well in the country for few bed my booked my accommodation for re redacted uh yesterday after them like booking.com and Airbnb reject like they they charged me the first time and then cancelled my booking so I had to book again
