and i'd like to share with you a few words today about what it is we've been doing what we've been up to and where we're heading next thanks so much for your attention this talk towards one goal many paths how individuals brought their perspective to learning near i think the key message here is that there's many of us that are working on this and we're very lucky to have the team that we have and to have the chance to grow this team in the way that we plan to grow it so hopefully by the end of this presentation you'll see uh and maybe agree uh that um we're doing good things and we'll be doing even greater things in the next months and years to come so thank you over the last couple of years starting in 2019 education was reactive i was one full-time employee i was hired by peter depalo head of devrel and education was a devrel function we decided to start on docs documentation and uh spent some time there in 2020 still reactive still a devrel function we were joined by josh ford who improved docs at lightspeed and i shifted my attention to focus on workshops but still on-demand workshops in response to what people were asking for this year we shifted our perspective to a proactive one we've gone from just a couple of folks focusing on education educational materials up to a team of five today with plans to grow to up to 10 full-time employees by the end of the year it's a very aggressive timeline we're currently an independent team we've been improving workshops but this year we've really focused on certification as you'll see building edtech products to support developers in the community uh and team growth next year uh continuing with the proactive stance uh hopefully we'll see 15 or more people on the team will be integrated i imagine at that point in a way that we haven't been before and improving certification programs but also growing out current and new strategic partnerships becoming more service oriented for a near foundation near inc other partners in the community at large and maybe even as a team of teams serving several different functions in the community so let's focus on this year what happened actually um this year um in 2021 near foundation chose to invest in education in two stages basically stage one was um months ago in q1 and the directive was you know make this work let's let's see something working here uh something that's tangible that we can point at and direct people to and uh and stage two we'll get to in just a minute so in q1 near foundation hired sasha baxter for education operational support and within days with support and encouragement from peter depaulo at that time near devrel lead we launched the near certified developer program as a one-week part-time experience so at this point we really had a five-day course that took people from what is near to building a working demonstration a smart contract that was running on near mostly an assembly script but also summon rust and within weeks we'd helped many developers build smart contracts at an increasing rate of dozens of contracts per month of course in response to people saying slow down a little bit this is too fast and we need this we need the explanation simplified and so on sasha launched learn near club to offer multilingual self-paced experiences and that that took us to 30 days of a self-paced learning experience all the way to a demo around the same time we also launched near academy as an intro to web 3 for web developers with design and development support from 101 labs a contractor who had built other learning experiences in the web3 space and that really brought the opportunity for a 30-minute self-paced learning experience to clarity on what is web3 and how does it work so that was the first quarter of this year in q2 we standardized the course content and invited invited robert yan that near devrel focused on china efforts to expand ncd the near certified developer program into china and they decided to go with a two-week course to a demo so their course is two weeks long part-time three touch points per week and invites members of the community to come in and demonstrate and help new developers envision what's possible uh and so two weeks to a demo is what they went with and it's going very well we engaged around the same time four coding boot camp grads who'd completed the near certified developer program to help our program stay grounded in a beginner-friendly reality basically because millions of developers worldwide are still learning as the rate of developers doubles maybe every five years if that statistic is still relevant about half developers half of the developers on the planet would then have less than five years experience at any given moment and one of those boot camp grads hibba conceived and launched near in minutes basically to deliver bite-sized binge-worthy lessons to devs and so we had five minutes to clarity at this point um and uh nier foundation committed additional capital at that point to grow the educational team uh they like what we were doing and said hey why don't you pick it up so with that capital we decided to hire jacob lindahl a developer out of the ncd program and jacob also works closely with bath a blockchain acceleration foundation and consults with the ethereum foundation we're very lucky to have him and as he joined the team we started the pickup pace with more capacity for software development so into q3 we hired daniel putkovko a design lead and ben syed a developer to the team ben designed and built near mesa bringing the time to a demo down to one hour basically but we actually held off on launching that product in favor of optimizing developer support because ben is is quite a flexible uh developer and so he can build software but also enjoys working one-on-one helping support people in discord and so he leaned into that if we're lucky he'll come back to nirmeza in 2022 dan and jacob meanwhile designed and built stats gallery you may have heard of it as an inviting way to explore near account activity and and that brought in a new uh entry uh of maybe one minute to clarity on what's going on with an account or a contract um and uh and that was very exciting uh shortly after we hired shashi shaker to help with strategy grow partnerships and streamline team operations we launched near university shortly thereafter with live and self-paced workshops to support metabuild hackathon and there we had really some of these workshops um taking people from you know not understanding a concept uh down to 10 minutes to producing a demo thanks to contributions by a number of members of the community that helped with that also in q3 we distributed uh over half a million dollars worth of fast grants a new accelerated program for distributing funds to about 20 partners and projects that are now focusing on building out educational services and software so we'll see the benefits of those through q4 and into 2022 and so a stage two here we can say is q4 where near foundation said okay so far so good now you've made something work can we make this big and so here we are in october and so far we've launched near university discord server with 200 attendees 200 members joining there twitter with over 500 followers already we've relaunched the ncd program level one now is a seven hour learning experience so one day to a demo down from five days and we've designed and launched two completely new educational experience experiences uh ncd level two uh one day to a full stack application and your certified instructor two weeks to teaching near certified developers how to build next month hopefully we'll see that shorten even down to one week to teaching we also launched three new engagement programs the fellowship program with entrepreneur in residence and developer and residence programs um a couple of dozen people are engaged in those roles at the moment the partner program with weekly kpis and monthly roundtable and the ambassador program targeting hundreds of universities around the world and very recently we've relaunched near university to highlight new programs partnerships and other ways to learn earn and connect so we've been very busy so far in october this is planned in q4 and you can see here on a monthly basis 3 000 developers trained by thin engagement programs 30 nps for thin engagement programs basically these lightweight programs where people come in like near academy and learn a little bit about near hundreds of university students exposed to near 10 certified near instructors thousands of dollars tens of thousands of dollars distributed through three uh dao programs one for instructors one for alumni one for mainnet projects hundreds of near certified developers and um dozens of jobs offered um a dozen or so eirs and dirs and testament applications launched and mainnet applications launched so this is an aggressive plan for q4 but this was kind of before the stage to make this big statement we said hey let's let's get this done how big can we get and so uh actually so far in october this is what we've been able to do launching three programs hundreds of unique registrants dozens of projects being shipped by near certified developers for certification with an mps of 65 so far so things seem to be going well almost three thousand three thousand students exposed to near through near academy and other programs 20 courses through near university with meta build included again a very high nps rating has been very satisfying for us to see and almost a dozen teachers to date some of them near certified instructors others professional instructors that have been teaching near and leaning into this work with us so so far so good and in terms of what's next for us within a year we expect to be able to grow and these are very ambitious numbers we have a lot of work to do to hundreds of thousands of developers trained through things like near academy and near-end minutes and other programs per month maintaining a very high nps tens of thousands of university students being exposed around the world to near hundreds of near certified instructors getting started on a monthly basis with tens of thousands of dollars being distributed through dows to support them thousands of near certified developers each quarter about a thousand a month that we hope to exp uh certify and hundreds of thousands of dollars to support uh them in their ambitions uh with hundreds of jobs offered per quarter as well um a hundred or so eirs and dirs entrepreneurs and residents and developers and residents and um hundreds of thousands of dollars distributed uh potentially for mainnet projects uh on a quarterly basis so about 100k per month uh with a hundred uh test net app apps launched and 10 mainnet apps launched and this is about 12 to 14 months from now we expect to see that so very aggressive schedule here and so far we're moving well but really the challenge is how can we grow the team in a way that will be able to support this kind of work because it's all about the individuals and the way they bring their perspective to this work so team growth over the next several months starting at five now we should hopefully within the next month add a senior developer and full-time instructor to the team and then with any luck we'll be able to hand off university programs to a program manager hire on a senior developer with some specialization in security before the end of the year and invite a lead curriculum designer to start with us to help us design more programs for more audiences and then early next year hopefully by january possibly february handing off the fellowship programs adding another developer to the team more instructors and more content production to the pipeline so today we're five uh tomorrow 15 or more here's another way of seeing that
